Speech – “The Delicious and the Vicious”
A few days ago, I saw a really horrible video about how pigs get tortured on one pig farm. This was not first of its kind for me.. it was a very disturbing video. I am sure many of you must have seen or at least known these undercover videos. Modern technology has allowed us to bring visibility into every nook and corner of this world – good or bad..
I remember a few years ago, KFC was caught in such controversy and since then fast food chains like McDonalds took serious notice of such malpractices and started monitoring their meat suppliers. Still, these things do happen.
It was just horrible,… horrible… the way those people treated the poor animals. Seeing it obviously had that same extreme effect on me as before – one where you start questioning whether or not, the fact that I being a non-vegetarian, somehow contributes or leads to such practices. After all, it is for people like me that those animals got there to be slaughtered in the first place! Sure, I did not tell them to torture them, but I guess I am one of the reasons.
If you take this back in history, prehistoric man used to hunt whenever he got hungry, then some of them started hunting more and others probably started buying/trading for the extra food from them. That’s where the food industry probably started. But in any case, there was no reason to torture before killing their prey.. The only reason behind killing back in those days was food or self-defence. Nature does allow that.. Nature allows killing, only for these 2 purposes.
Now speaking about the modern times, I understand the dynamics of mass production and a growing demand for food all over the world. That in itself leads to all kinds of practices which are on the borderline of being unethical if not illegal.. so pretty soon you are eating dinosaur chickens with their man-made genetically altered DNAs.. these practices are still cruel to animals in my opinion. But I am not even considering these cases here. I am talking about torture here, which should not be a consequence of just the high demand for food?.. I mean, what kind of a person gets pleasure out of torturing helpless beings who are brought there to be killed….?
I know I am not in my kindergarten. And I know there are a lot of sick people out there in the world – torturing animals, humans – and you hear about them in the news all the time. You keep ignoring because you can’t do much about it anyway. We are told from our childhood days that God is watching over whatever you do.. and in your adult life, you realize that that’s not so true, God is not some omnipresent policeman.. ‘coz if He was one, such things would never happen. One also understands as one gets older that no matter what books or our religious leaders might say, not everybody pays for what he inflicts on someone else. In fact, the laws of modern society treat the guilty more humanely than how the their victims got treated.
And I think this imbalance is hopelessly going to grow – the crimes get worse and more horrifying, and the society puts more emphasis on giving these criminals a fair trial – and in the process sometimes set them free – rather than striving to give fair justice to the victims. Sure, these workers will lose their jobs in those factories and then what..? go somewhere else! And what about those animals that suffered – are they then supposed to feel good?? – “well, this man lost his job in the xyz factory.. so I am avenged now that he is working somewhere else”
When I say this, let me state some disclaimers, if you will – I am not a preacher or some religious person. In fact, I am a non-vegetarian. That sort of goes against me in all this. But yes, I am no animal activist.. or any activist for that matter. Although it did not take me to be an activist to feel outraged by what I saw in that video.
If you think about these activists – the animal rights activists are in better shape as far as their alignments are concerned since they know exactly who is torturing whom. The human rights activists are the confused lot in my opinion.. ‘coz nobody is torturing humans other than the humans themselves – so they are in this situation and going like – “well, this human is already tortured and dead, so let’s support this other human who is alive – even though he is the criminal..”
Something I have never understood in this whole justice system – that a person can plead insanity and get away with everything.. So what is this? “I am sorry but I am insane, so I should be excused and treated humanely!”..or do they tell the victims “I’ve special powers of insanity so you won’t feel the pain even if I torture you??..” Is that what it is?.. so that more people are welcome to be insane and do whatever they like?
The point I am trying to make here by bringing human victims into the picture is, just where do you think these animals stand in this whole charade? At the lowest end of the justice system if you ask me… Seems like there is nothing that can change it.. unless we produce some decent human beings.. by genetically re-engineering them! Time to fix the consumers rather than the produce, I say!
